The plan to keep an eye on sex offenders who don’t have homes in Wisconsin is moving forward at the State Capitol.
The State Assembly on Thursday approved legislation that would use ankle bracelets to track homeless sex offenders.
“Monitoring the whereabouts of released sex offenders is important for the safety of our community, particularly our children,” Rep Scott Allen, R-Waukesha, said in a statement. “This is true even for those who have no permanent address.”
Wisconsin currently requires all sex offenders to provide an address when they leave prison. Sex offenders are banned from living too close to schools, parks, daycares, and other places where there are children.
But the current law doesn’t have any requirements for sex offenders who don’t have a place to go.
The legislation would solve that lack of a permanent home by requiring newly released sex offenders to be monitored by GPS.

Of course Wisconsin would do this! It’s already been said that politicians in Wisconsin have investments in the GPS monitoring company, Justicepoint. But of course all politicians have their hands in investments.
I still think this is a 4A violation that wouldn’t pass US District Court of WI muster or even US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals muster. There’s no reasonable suspicion for the need to do this. Off paper is off paper.
Wisconsin is home of the holes in the logic down in Madison and across the Cheese head state.
Politicians never seem to think things through and only consider public relations for the next election. If a person is homeless, where can they charge the monitor? It is always good politics to play on voters’ fears even if those fears are baseless. I’m not surprised that the measure passed overwhelmingly in both houses. Afterall, this is an election year.
Will Wisconsin pay for solar power banks or generators for homeless to plug into? I swear these lawmakers are a few fries short of a happy meal.
